Cloisonné, an enameling technique, is an ancient art that originated in the Byzantine Empire before arriving in China during the 12th and 13th centuries. The process involves soldering intricate wire cells onto a metal base, filling them with glass enamel, and firing them at high temperatures. Robert Kuo redefines this heritage craft by introducing fluid, organic designs and pioneering a patented line of matte finishes. His latest work expands the medium onto an ambitious scale, moving away from traditional monochrome styles toward vibrant, multi-hued colors and intricate patterning.
